The money saving potential of the government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) could be more than originally anticipated by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), according to the Carbon Trust.

Businesses that carry out energy efficiency measures in response to their ESOS audits could save an average of 20 per cent of their energy costs based on analysis of 86 full audits carried out by the organisations, claims the Trust’s energy consultant David Tobin, a sharp increase from the DECC’s estimates, which indicated that the scheme could save firms a collective £250m by achieving 5 per cent reductions in their energy bills.

A business with both average energy expenditure, calculated at £1.8m by the Carbon Trust, and average energy reductions could potentially save £360,000, according to the organisation, while improvements to energy management, lighting, heating and metering have been able to reduce construction firms’ energy costs by 23 per cent on average.
